Home Alone
My older kids and their significant others decided to kidnap the young cubs for the night. They took them swimming. They took them to a movie. They grilled outside.
I was home alone with nobody to talk to for the first time in ages, so I called a friend to see if she wanted to go have dinner.
I love her to bits and pieces, but our personalities are polar opposites. She's rather formal and stuffy - at least on the surface. Underneath it all is a quick with with a delightful sense of humor. She puts up with my Bohemian quirkiness by rolling her eyes and shaking her head, but behind the her sighs of "good God, what will she do next?" is one of my best friends.
I was driving and she got to choose where we were heading. My jaw dropped when she hesitantly said she wanted to check out the giant casino that just completed an enormous renovation project. I never gamble. Hell, I have never even been in one of the many casinos located in my state. She's not a gambler either, and saw the surprise on my face as soon as she suggested it. Her plan was to check out the restaurants there - not to gamble.
Aha - now it's making sense.
We wandered through to see if something struck our fance. One was a buffet - not a chance for me. My tummy cringes at the mere thought of eating at one of those giant germ factories. We decided to head out and find something else, but then a scathingly brilliant idea scampered through my brain.
Moi - "Let's gamble"
Her - "Not a chance!"
Moi - "Come on, I have never done this before. Please please please?? Just five dollars each!"
Her - "We don't even know how to work the machines!"
Moi - "There's an info desk right there. We can ask and we're both have graduate degrees, I think we can figure it out. Puleeeeeeze??????"
Her - *with rolling eyes and a sigh* Fine, but just five dollars!"
I scampered over to the help desk with my reluctant friend bringing up the rear and asked the dude working what I was supposed to do. After getting directions we wandered until we found some machines we thought were cute, and each plunked our five bucks into the penny machines.
It was confusing.
Almost immediately, I had almost nine dollars. She was down and glaring at me.
Suddenly, my machine made a goofy noise and announced I'd just won 280 free spins. All I had to do was touch the screen and bingo - it started spinning, and spinning, and spinning.
In the lower right corner was a little box labeled "credits" and they begin to mount. We watched with puzzled looks and tried to figure out what was a winning spin and what wasn't. None of it made sense to us. I announched that as soon as the silly machine stopped doing all those spins, I was cashing out. I figured I had about twenty bucks built up - a nice little return on my five dollars.
It finished spinning, I clicked cash out, a little sheet of paper spilled out to tell me I now was in possession of $80.25. Yup, I won!
I do so love beginner's luck! It paid for dinner!
Peace

Sarai - It made me laugh to walk out winning a bit like that. I doubt I'll ever become a regular at one of those places, but at least I know how to put the money into the machine now!!

So miss gambly won. I wonder when the next visit to the casino is. Now that you have tasted it you are probably hooked. :-)

I love the casino, LOL. I go about once a year and stay for hours. It's a good thing the nearest one is two hours away, because I would probably be in it everyday!
So, where did you finally wind up eating?

Damn... $80 on a penny machine, you lucky duck! I've donated about $150 in the last month (we had company) to our local casinos. That is why I never go unless company is in town.

Yahooo for beginngers luck! I am not a gambler either. I dragged hubby into a casino one time. He rolled his eyes at me too. Unfortunately, we walked out a bit poorer than when we went in. No beginners luck for us :(

I don't enjoy slot machines, but I just love the arcades you get down by the beach over here. I like to collect the tickets and get prizes :D:D:D
That was just the cutest story ever. I can so imagine you batting your eyelashes at the info guy and asking what you're supposed to do!

Hehe - that certainly beats the £10 profit I made on my first Casino visit. Congrats to you!

Do places still have penny machines??? I thought those hit the slot machine grave yard years ago. I love to gamble, but I never do it because it is just too easy to lose the precious cash that I need for other more important things. However, it is fun and beginners luck is great! Glad you won enough to pay for your dinner! Sounds like a good time.

I can't remember which one by me (Foxwoods or Mohegan) even has 1/2 cent machines! Those are the machines I like to play because if I loose, it's not that much money!

The first time I went to a casino, I lost the $300 I took with me. What really made it hurt was that I hit a blackjack winning streak that took my total to over $4000 before I gave it all back.
Since then, I've never stepped into a casino.

isn't the mantra of gambling supposed to be quit while you are ahead?

Awesome!!! I love winning!! The bad thing is that if you're not hitting anything, you can go through $5 in about 1 1/2 minutes....lol
